The Canaries are Spain's winter charter: from Marina San Miguel in south Tenerife, La Gomera is 20 to 27 NM across a trade-wind channel, the season runs November to March with 20 to 22 °C afternoons, and the Atlantic makes it a week for experienced crews.

YACHT TYPES

A small fleet, about 30 boats, almost all on Tenerife: choose a sailing yacht of 40 ft or more for the channels, reef early, and take a skipper unless your crew has open-water experience.

A typical week from Marina San Miguel

Saturday to Saturday, Tenerife and La Gomera: the channel crossing comes early in the week, and the return runs down the west coast of Tenerife, sheltered from the trade wind.

Day 1, San Miguel to Puerto Colón (10 NM). A short leg west round Punta de la Rasca, to try the boat and the reefing before the crossing; berth booked ahead.

Day 2, to San Sebastián de La Gomera (20 NM). Across the channel with the trade wind on the beam: when it blows 20 knots outside, the middle can see 30, so reef in the marina. Marina La Gomera is booked online, and anchoring inside the harbour is not allowed.

Day 3, to Valle Gran Rey (15 NM). Along the south coast of La Gomera, in the island's lee, to the small harbour of Vueltas: book through Puertos Canarios, or anchor off the beach in settled weather.

Day 4, back to San Sebastián (15 NM). East again along the same sheltered coast, keeping the afternoon for a taxi up to the laurel forest of the Garajonay national park.

Day 5, to Los Gigantes (17 NM). Back across to Tenerife, to the marina at the foot of the Los Gigantes cliffs; the entrance needs care in a swell.

Day 6, to Masca and back (6 NM). A short day under the cliffs: Masca bay is one of the few anchorages on this coast, swimming allowed, landing on the beach not. Second night at Los Gigantes.

Day 7, to San Miguel (20 NM). Down the west and south coasts, past Puerto Colón and round Punta de la Rasca, back by Friday afternoon.

Two weeks add La Palma, 45 to 50 NM north-west of La Gomera, or El Hierro, about 35 NM south-west. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, 7 NM apart, are a different week from a different base.

Practical points for a Canaries charter

Licences and experience

Spanish rules apply: a licence from your EEA country, or a title on the Spanish list, such as the ICC, valid to 12 NM from the coast, or the RYA Coastal Skipper, valid to 20 NM. Canary operators ask for Coastal Skipper level and a VHF certificate, and some keep less experienced crews to south Tenerife and La Gomera. Said plainly: without open-water experience, take a skipper.

Wind and sea

The north-east trade wind blows most days, strongest and steadiest from June to August. Where it squeezes between the islands and round their ends, off Anaga, Teno and the south-east of Tenerife, it can go from 20 knots to more than 30 within minutes: reef before you leave the lee. In winter a north to north-west Atlantic swell runs onto the north coasts; the south and west coasts of Tenerife and La Gomera are the sheltered side.

Moorings and fees

Berths are cheap by Mediterranean standards: Marina San Miguel lists about 24 euros a night for a 12 by 4 m yacht before 7% IGIC, and the Puertos Canarios public harbours, Vueltas among them, charge roughly 15 to 40 euros for 12 to 14 m in 2026. Harbours on La Gomera are booked ahead. The Teno-Rasca protected area bans anchoring over seagrass, and whales and dolphins may not be approached closer than 60 m.

Getting there

Tenerife South airport is 15 minutes from Marina San Miguel; Marina Santa Cruz is 10 km from Tenerife North airport. Ferries run from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera. Provision on Tenerife before the crossing.

Why does this page say ask our adviser rather than search?

Because the Canaries fleet is small, about 30 boats almost all on Tenerife, and the live search shows only part of it. Tell us your dates and we ask the operators the same day.

Can we reach Gran Canaria or Lanzarote?

Gran Canaria is 45 to 55 NM from Tenerife, a long day across the most exposed channel, and Las Palmas fills with rally boats in November, when the ARC leaves for the Caribbean on 22 November 2026. Lanzarote is a separate week, from a base on Lanzarote.

Will we see whales?

Often: pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live year round off south-west Tenerife. Keep 60 m away, slow to 4 knots within 500 m and stay no longer than 30 minutes within 100 m.

What does Seeksail need to advise us?

Dates, cabins, licences and sea miles, skipper or not, and we shortlist the boats available on Tenerife with a recommendation; the fleet is small, so book winter weeks early.
