A typical week from Marmaris

Saturday to Saturday: the sheltered gulf first, the long legs west to Datça and Knidos in the morning calm, and the return east with the afternoon breeze behind.

Day 1, Marmaris to Orhaniye (10 NM). Round the headlands into the Hisarönü Gulf, to the sheltered bay of Orhaniye and the sand spit of Kızkumu, where you can walk out into the sea.

Day 2, to Selimiye (5 NM). A village at the head of a deep bay: boats moor stern-to along the quay under the fish restaurants, and a Byzantine castle stands on the hill above.

Day 3, to Bozburun and Datça (20 NM). Coffee and provisions in Bozburun, a village that still builds gulets, then west along the peninsula to Datça, a port of entry whose town harbour takes 35 to 40 yachts, with water, electricity and fuel.

Day 4, to Knidos (15 NM). To the western tip of the peninsula and the ruins of Knidos, with two theatres, the terrace of a round temple and two ancient harbours, open 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Anchor in 10 to 12 m in the ancient harbour, exposed in a strong meltemi.

Day 5, to Bozukkale (32 NM). The long leg east along the south coast, downwind in the afternoon breeze, to the sheltered cove under the fortress of Loryma, built by Rhodes after the siege of 305 BC; its restaurants give a free berth if you dine.

Day 6, to Çiftlik (14 NM). A shorter leg along the coast to the bay of Çiftlik, the last swim before Marmaris.

Day 7, to Marmaris (10 NM). Into Marmaris bay and back on the berth by Friday afternoon, with time for the castle, built in 1522 for Süleyman's Rhodes campaign and now a museum, a short walk from Netsel.

Rhodes is 25 NM from Marmaris and Symi about 10 NM from Datça, both Greek: a plan with exit and entry formalities, not a lunch stop.

Practical points for a Marmaris charter

Licences and paperwork

Bareboat needs at least one person with an ICC or a national licence, and a VHF certificate aboard; acceptance of the RYA Day Skipper varies by operator, so ask in writing. The operator files the electronic transit log, the Seyir İzin Belgesi, with every name and passport aboard, one to two weeks before departure, and charges about 95 to 110 euros for it in 2026. A skipper costs about 200 euros a day plus food and a cabin, and some operators add a compulsory service pack of 295 to 360 euros.

Wind and sea

The meltemi season runs from May to September. At Marmaris it comes from the west-north-west at 3 to 5 Beaufort after lunch and drops at sunset; it is stronger round Knidos, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, while the Hisarönü Gulf stays flat. Plan the westward legs for the morning and let the breeze bring you home.

Moorings and fees

Restaurant jetties in Orhaniye, Selimiye, Bozburun, Bozukkale and the bays are free if you dine, some with water and electricity. Datça town harbour berths visitors where its staff direct them, and nights in Netsel and the other Marmaris marinas are charged by length. Discharging waste water is banned: the boat's Mavi Kart, the blue card, records each pump-out, and fines run to about 32,000 lira.

Getting there

Dalaman airport is about 90 km, 1 h 30, from Marmaris and 1 h 45 from Orhaniye; ferries link Marmaris and Rhodes. Provisioning: supermarkets in Marmaris, smaller shops in Bozburun and Datça.

Can we go to Rhodes or Symi?

With the operator's agreement: exit through a Turkish port of entry (Marmaris or Datça, or Bozburun in season), entry at Rhodes or Symi, an agent at about 160 to 200 euros, no clearance after 5 pm, and a new transit log when you return.

Marmaris or Göcek?

Göcek for the easiest week of short hops; Marmaris for more sailing, Knidos and the Datça peninsula. Both give you a restaurant jetty every evening.

Is August a mistake?

Not for the wind, which is at its best, but the jetties in Selimiye and Bozburun fill early and the heat is fierce. June and September are the sweet spot.
