Croatia, South Dalmatia
Dubrovnik trades fleet size for scenery: the walled city as a departure point, the Elaphiti islands within an hour, and Mljet, Pelješac, Korčula and Lastovo in a week with fewer boats around you than anywhere north of here.
YACHT TYPES
Sailing yachts 40 to 50 ft and catamarans 40 to 46 ft; a smaller fleet than Split, so book early for July and August.
A typical week from Dubrovnik
The south Dalmatian week is a loop through islands that see a fraction of the traffic of Hvar or Brač.
Day 1, Dubrovnik to Šipan or Lopud (10 NM). The Elaphiti: Šipanska Luka's quay and konobas, or the anchorage off Lopud's sandy Šunj beach.
Day 2, to Polače or Pomena on Mljet (12 NM). Mljet's national park with its two salt lakes; Polače is the sheltered anchorage with restaurant buoys, Pomena the small harbour by the park entrance.
Day 3, to Korčula (18 NM). The walled town, a tight ACI marina and the anchorage in Lumbarda as the fallback.
Day 4, to Lastovo (20 NM). Zaklopatica's buoys and its two restaurants; Lastovo is a nature park with a fee and the darkest sky in the Adriatic.
Day 5, to Kobaš or Ston on Pelješac (30 NM). The Kobaš cove restaurants, or the Ston channel for the oysters and the salt pans; a long reach in the afternoon breeze.
Day 6, to Dubrovnik (17 NM). Back past the Elaphiti with a last swim at Koločep.

Practical points for a Dubrovnik charter
Licences
Croatian rules: a recognised skipper's licence and a VHF certificate aboard. The fleet is smaller than Split's, so operators are stricter about documents arriving before the charter.
Wind and sea
The afternoon Maestral is reliable in July and August; the Jugo from the southeast is more frequent here than further north, especially in spring and autumn, and brings swell into south-facing anchorages. Lastovo and the Pelješac channel are the exposed passages of the week.
Moorings and fees
ACI Dubrovnik and ACI Korčula are the only marinas on the loop; the rest is buoys and anchorages, so the mooring budget is lower than for Split. Mljet and Lastovo charge park fees. One-way charters to Split are possible with most operators for a fee of a few hundred euros.
Getting there
Dubrovnik airport to ACI Komolac is 30 minutes; the old town is a 15-minute taxi from the marina, worth an evening before or after the charter. Provisioning: a large supermarket next to the marina.
Why is Dubrovnik more expensive than Split?
Fewer yachts and steady demand. Booking six months ahead, or choosing June or September, closes most of the gap.
Is one week enough for Dubrovnik to Split one-way?
Only with long days. Two weeks is comfortable; one week is better spent on the southern loop.
Are the islands quiet in August?
Compared with Hvar, yes. Korčula town fills up; Mljet, Lastovo and the Elaphiti stay calm.
