Greece is several charter destinations, not one

The right Greek base depends on the sailing experience your group wants. The Ionian, the Saronic Gulf and the Cyclades have different passage lengths, wind exposure, logistics and styles of island. Choose the cruising area first; a yacht that is well located for one region may be impractical for another.

Ionian: a gentler planning profile

Lefkas and Corfu are common starting points for routes through the Ionian islands. The area often suits families, newer skippers and groups that value shorter hops, sheltered options and frequent stops. It can still be busy, and afternoon wind, harbour technique and berth availability remain part of the plan.

Athens and the Saronic Gulf

An Athens-area start can combine straightforward airport access with islands such as Aegina, Poros and Hydra. It is a useful middle ground for groups wanting Greek island character without automatically committing to a longer Cyclades circuit.

Cyclades: choose deliberately

The Cyclades may appeal to confident crews seeking stronger sailing and iconic islands, but exposed passages and seasonal wind can make a rigid wish list unrealistic. A skippered charter can remove responsibility from the group, but it does not remove the effect of weather on the route.

Practical decisions for a Greek yacht charter

Match experience to the exact cruising area

Bareboat approval depends on qualifications, experience and operator requirements. Provide sailing documents before booking and ask the operator to confirm acceptance in writing. A general description such as ‘experienced sailor’ is not enough.

Plan the first and last day

Weekly charters commonly follow a fixed changeover cycle. Boarding may be later than check-in, and the yacht may need to return to base the evening before disembarkation. Check these times before arranging an arrival on the same day.

Mooring style matters

Town quays, anchors and laid moorings require different handling and can be busy in peak periods. Ask how comfortable the nominated skipper is with Mediterranean mooring and whether the chosen yacht is appropriate for the group’s practical experience.

Keep the comparison specific

Compare the individual yacht’s cabin plan, ventilation, generator or air-conditioning arrangement, water capacity and tender—not just model name or length. Also separate mandatory operator charges, refundable deposits, crew costs and likely local spending.

Which region is best for a first-time group?

The Ionian or a conservative Saronic route may be easier to plan than an ambitious Cyclades week, but the correct choice depends on the skipper, dates and group. Ask for a route with realistic alternatives.

Can we see several famous island groups in one week?

Usually it is better to explore one region well. Long transfers between island groups consume usable holiday time and make the plan more vulnerable to wind or delays.

Do we need a skipper?

Hire one if your qualifications may not be accepted, your recent experience is limited or the group wants less responsibility. Reserve a suitable private cabin and include crew meals and contract terms in the comparison.
