Koh Chang is the quiet end of Thai chartering: a handful of yachts based on the island's east coast for Koh Wai, Koh Mak, Koh Kood and the Koh Rang marine park, 5 to 25 NM apart, in a November-to-April season while the Andaman is at its busiest. Choose the coast for the season
Thailand is not a single year-round charter zone. Phuket and the Andaman coast have a different seasonal pattern from Gulf cruising areas. Your dates should determine which base is considered before you compare yachts.
Phuket and the Andaman coast
A Phuket-area week can combine limestone scenery, anchorages and islands such as the Phang Nga Bay or Krabi area, with longer options depending on conditions and operator limits. A realistic route should avoid trying to collect every famous island in seven days.
An illustrative one-week rhythm
A practical plan may alternate short scenic legs with one or two longer passages, while keeping a protected alternative for unsettled weather. Tides, park rules, daylight and permitted sailing areas influence the exact stops.
Other Thai bases
Koh Chang and Gulf locations can suit different months and travel plans, but fleet choice and operating arrangements may be more limited. Confirm the actual base, airport transfer, season and support network rather than treating them as substitutes for Phuket.
What to check for a Thailand charter
Monsoon patterns and local restrictions
Seasonal weather affects where operators allow yachts to sail. Exact limits, park access and current conditions must come from the operator’s briefing and official local information. Night sailing may be prohibited, making daylight planning essential.
Tides, depth and visibility
Some anchorages and approaches require tide awareness. Confirm yacht draft, charting, dinghy arrangements and the nominated skipper’s local confidence. A professional skipper may be the right choice for a group that wants less navigational responsibility.
Water, power and air conditioning
Check the exact yacht’s water capacity, watermaker, generator and air-conditioning operating limits. Air conditioning may depend on shore power or a running generator; it should never be assumed from the yacht’s age or size.
Crew and service expectations
A skipper is responsible for the yacht and navigation, not automatically cooking, cleaning or childcare. If you want additional service, clarify whether a hostess or cook is available and reserve suitable crew accommodation.

When is Phuket normally considered?
Many groups target the drier winter period, but exact conditions and operator restrictions vary. Start with your dates and ask what cruising area is practical for that week.
