Choose which Italy you want to sail
Italy’s charter regions are too far apart to compare as one route. Sardinia, the Gulf of Naples and Amalfi coast, and Sicily with the Aeolian Islands offer different winds, shore experiences, airport transfers and berthing patterns. Select the region before comparing yachts.
Sardinia
Northern Sardinia suits crews interested in clear water, the Maddalena archipelago and, when permitted, a route toward southern Corsica. Wind exposure and popular high-season harbours reward flexible planning. It can be excellent for confident sailors or a professionally skippered group.
Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi area
A Procida or Naples-area start can combine islands and celebrated mainland coastline. The trade-off is demand: famous stops and marina berths can be busy and costly. A workable week should include quieter alternatives rather than depend on Capri or another single high-demand harbour.
Sicily and the Aeolian Islands
A Sicilian base can support an island-focused week around the Aeolians or another defined local region. Avoid assuming that Sicily, the Amalfi coast and Sardinia can be combined in an ordinary weekly charter.
What to compare for an Italian charter
Marinas, buoys and anchorages
Overnight costs can vary substantially with season, yacht size and location. Catamarans may be charged more because of beam. Ask which stops in the proposed route require advance planning and which alternatives are realistic if the preferred berth is unavailable.
Bareboat documents
Italian operators commonly require a recognised sailing qualification for the nominated skipper. Ask the operator to approve the actual certificate and experience record in writing before booking. Carry the originals required at check-in.
Boarding and return timing
An evening boarding time may mean the first departure is the following morning, while the yacht may need to return before the final night. Compare usable sailing time, not only the advertised seven-day date range.
Crew accommodation
A hired skipper normally needs a dedicated cabin and meals. Confirm whether a forepeak is contractually and practically suitable on the exact yacht. Do not allocate every advertised berth to guests before accounting for crew.

Choose Sardinia for an island and sailing-led week; choose the Gulf of Naples or Amalfi area when shore culture and famous coastal stops are central. Travel logistics and berth budget may be decisive.
Is Italy suitable for a first charter?
It can be with a conservative route and the right skipper. Busy harbours, formal qualifications and exposed conditions in some regions mean the exact plan matters more than the country label.
Should we reserve every night?
That depends on region, season and itinerary. Some groups value reservations; others mix marinas with anchorages or buoys. Confirm what can actually be booked and keep alternatives.
