A flexible Abacos itinerary from Marsh Harbour

The Sea of Abaco allows a varied week of settlements, beaches and protected-water cruising, but shallow routes and ocean passages still require experienced judgment. This itinerary uses Marsh Harbour as the home base and treats Green Turtle Cay as optional. Distances are planning figures only; the yacht’s draft, visibility, weather, local notices and charter-company boundaries control the actual route.

Saturday — Marsh Harbour to Hope Town, or remain at the base | about 7–10 nm

An on-time handover may allow the short crossing to Elbow Cay, but only when an appropriate Hope Town mooring or marina arrangement is available. Anchoring is not permitted inside Hope Town Harbour, so the destination cannot be treated as a casual late arrival. White Sound or an anchorage west of the lighthouse may be alternatives under current guidance. After a delayed briefing, stay in Marsh Harbour and cross on Sunday.

Sunday — Hope Town, Tahiti Beach and Little Harbour | about 18–25 nm

Explore Hope Town and the Elbow Reef Lighthouse before heading south. Tahiti Beach at the southern end of Elbow Cay can provide the lunch and swimming stop when tide and anchoring conditions suit. Continue to Little Harbour for the night, where the foundry, gallery and Pete’s Pub provide a distinctive shore visit. The harbour entrance and depth must be checked for the actual yacht; do not assume every charter catamaran can use the same route.

Monday — Little Harbour to Man-O-War Cay | about 18–24 nm

Begin north with a possible lunch stop around Tilloo Cay or another permitted central-Abaco anchorage. Man-O-War Cay offers a quiet settlement with a long boatbuilding tradition and a very different atmosphere from Hope Town. It is a dry island with no public alcohol sales, an important practical detail for visitors. Choose the harbour or marina arrangement from current operator information and respect private shoreline areas.

Tuesday — Man-O-War Cay to Great Guana Cay | about 8–14 nm

The short passage creates time for beaches and shore exploration. Fisher’s Bay and Settlement Harbour position the yacht near the village, while Baker’s Bay farther north may offer a different anchorage experience; inland resort property there is private. Confirm moorings, marina space and dinghy access rather than assuming every option is public. Great Guana’s Atlantic beach and reef are the main reasons to keep the sailing day short.

Wednesday — Optional Green Turtle Cay extension | about 18–28 nm

Reaching Green Turtle Cay may require using the Whale Cay passage because of shallow water inside the Sea of Abaco. This exposed ocean route is weather-sensitive and must be assessed using current local information. If suitable, continue to a confirmed harbour or marina arrangement and visit New Plymouth. If not, remain around Great Guana, Treasure Cay or the central Abacos. The alternative is a successful route decision, not a failed itinerary.

Thursday — Green Turtle or central Abacos to Hope Town area | about 20–32 nm

Use Thursday to move back within a short Friday passage of Marsh Harbour. From Green Turtle, start early and cross the Whale Cay area only when conditions remain appropriate. From Great Guana, the day can be slower, with a lunch stop near Man-O-War or Elbow Cay. Finish at a confirmed Hope Town mooring, White Sound marina or another approved Elbow Cay anchorage. Avoid arriving after dark merely to preserve the published sequence.

Friday — Elbow Cay to Marsh Harbour before 5 p.m. | about 7–14 nm

The short final passage leaves room for a morning walk or swim, but the yacht should return with time for fuel and hand-back. Visibility over shallow water and local traffic still matter even close to the base. Spend Friday night aboard in Marsh Harbour if the charter agreement permits. If Thursday ended north of Great Guana, reassess whether a Friday return provides enough margin.

Abacos ports and anchorages compared

A useful Abacos plan separates settlements, beach stops and operational staging points. The best choice changes with draft, weather and confirmed mooring availability.

Hope Town Harbour, White Sound and Tahiti Beach

Hope Town Harbour gives direct access to the settlement but requires a mooring or marina plan because anchoring is not available inside. White Sound provides another marina area. Tahiti Beach is a daytime beach and anchorage option, not a substitute for checking overnight suitability.

Little Harbour

Little Harbour is the southern cultural stop, centred on the Johnston family foundry and gallery. It adds distance but offers a more remote evening than the central cays. Remove it if the group prioritises the northern extension.

Man-O-War Cay

Man-O-War rewards visitors interested in local boatbuilding history and a quiet settlement. Its dry-island rules and limited nightlife make it a deliberate choice rather than a generic restaurant stop.

Fisher’s Bay, Settlement Harbour and Baker’s Bay

Fisher’s Bay and Settlement Harbour support access to Great Guana’s village. Baker’s Bay is farther north and may help position the yacht, but shore access beyond the beach is restricted by private property. Confirm current public facilities and anchoring guidance.

Green Turtle Cay and New Plymouth

Green Turtle adds a colonial settlement and a distinct northern-Abacos experience. Its cost is the Whale Cay routing decision and a longer Thursday return. It should remain optional until the week’s weather and yacht draft are known.

When to keep the route in the central Abacos

Skip Green Turtle when the Whale Cay passage is unsuitable, the crew wants shorter days or the yacht’s draft restricts options. Hope Town, Little Harbour, Man-O-War and Great Guana already form a complete week. A Seeksail adviser can help compare yachts and skipper arrangements before the operator confirms current navigation limits.

Questions to resolve before booking

Use these questions to decide whether the route and yacht suit the people actually travelling.

Is this route suitable for a first bareboat charter?

It can be, provided the skipper meets the operator’s experience requirements and is comfortable with shallow-water navigation. The charter company makes the final qualification decision.

Do we need to follow every stop?

No. This is an example planning structure, not a fixed schedule. Weather, draft, local notices and available berths or moorings can change the sequence.

Why keep the last two days conservative?

A protected return margin reduces the chance that the crew must rush back to base when conditions or timings change.

What should we ask Seeksail to check?

Share the group size, skipper experience, preferred pace, budget and sleeping requirements. A Seeksail adviser can then help identify yachts and operators that fit the request.
